A CHARITY which provides vital help and support for wounded, injured and sick soldiers is to receive a £22,000 boost – thanks to the efforts of a former county council chairman.

North Yorkshire County Councillor Bernard Bateman selected ABF the Soldiers’ Charity to benefit from his fundraising activities during his term of office, which ran from May 2013 to May 2014.

In the course of the 12 months, he organised social functions, a gala ball, and a concert, which collectively raised £22,000.

The money, which will be presented to the charity at a ceremony at Catterick Garrison tonight (Friday, August 8), will be used primarily to fund activities at the Personnel Recovery Unit in Cambrai Lines in the garrison.

“I am so glad to have been able to do something in my year of office to help the brave men and women who suffer injuries in the service of their country,” said Councillor Bateman.

“Their selflessness and bravery deserve all the support we as a community can give.”

The unit looks after wounded, injured and sick soldiers and assists them in their recovery, either to return to the Army or, as is more often the case, to civilian life.

“We are truly indebted to Bernard Bateman for the extraordinary lengths to which he has gone to raise such a magnificent sum for ABF the Soldiers’ Charity,” said Major Barney Barnbrook, the organisation’s regional director.

“We would also like to acknowledge the significant support given by local businesses and local people.

“This money will help us to continue to provide support to soldiers, former soldiers and their families who find themselves in genuine need – as we have done since 1944.”
