A CANDLE for each of the 98 former Durham School pupils killed in the First World War was lit and then extinguished as their names were read out in a roll call of the dead.

The moving ceremony came at the end of an evening of remembrance held at the 600-year-old school, in Durham City, organised by the Durham and Framwellgate Moor branch of the Royal British Legion.

Earlier, guests including Councillor John Robinson, the Mayor of Durham and chairman of Durham County Council, and Sue Snowdon, the Lord Lieutenant of County Durham, had enjoyed a candlelit supper at the school.

The lights were dimmed at 10pm, as part of the Lights Out initiative, and a short service of remembrance was held at the school chapel, with wreaths laid.
