YOUNGSTERS turned back time to enjoy a Victorian-themed event as a prize for being the best pupils to walk or cycle to school.

Pupils from Cockton Hill Primary School, in Bishop Auckland, were named the best in the Durham County Council Mega Motion campaign.

The scheme aims to promote a healthier lifestyle amongst youngsters and encourages them to cycle, walk or "scoot" to school.

Pupils gained points for using sustainable travel to get to school, which they could then cash in for prizes such as themed walks to school.

The Cockton Hill children have been hailed as the Mega Motion champions by staff at the county council.

The pupils picked a Victorian-themed walk to school before the summer holidays and were also given goodie bags as part of the prize.

Councillor Neil Foster, cabinet member for economic regeneration at the council, said: “Huge congratulations to Cockton Hill and all the other schools who have taken part in Mega Motion.

“It is a brilliant scheme, helping our children to stay healthy and it also teaches them all about environmentally friendly ways of travel from a young age.”
