A MAN has undergone extensive facial surgery after being subjected to a brutal attack in Durham city centre.

A Durham Police spokesman said the 34-year-old man from Sunderland was was assaulted outside the Premier Inn, in Freemans Place, Walkergate, at about 1.50am on Sunday morning.

He suffered serious facial injuries and after initially being seen at University Hospital North Durham was transferred to Sunderland Royal Infirmary where he had extensive surgery to his face.

A 19-year-old man from the Wheatley Hill area was arrested a short time after the incident on suspicion of assault. He is on police bail while inquiries continue.
