SCHOOLCHILDREN from Darlington cheered on England’s hopes in the Commonwealth Games with a special trip to Glasgow.

The 50 children from years five and six of Corporation Road Primary School spent two days watching the games and took in netball and weightlifting.

The group stayed the night in a school just a very short walk from the main games site on the banks of the River Clyde.

Children brought their own sleeping bags and to make it affordable, the school only charged parents what they could afford, a minimum of £10, so that all children could attend and be inspired.

Further costs of the trip were covered by fundraising.

All the children wore red embroidered caps to enable them to be seen easily and one pupil, Daniel Woodward, was picked out of the crowd to be the official starter of the netball match between Jamaica and St Lucia.

Peter King, headteacher, said, "We had a brilliant time at Glasgow 2014.

“The weather was glorious and we saw some very high class sports action.

“We took the children to London 2012 and were really keen to repeat that success and excitement with the Commonwealth Games.

“I can't thank our brilliant staff enough for volunteering their time during the summer holidays, nor the people at Lorne Primary in Glasgow where we stayed.

“Everyone ensured we had a great adventure and I felt proud to be part of it.

“Once again, we were able to say 'we were there.'”
