A GOLFER is organising a fundraising tournament to raise awareness for the North East Autism Society in support of his brother, and has pulled in professional golfers to play alongside local amateurs.

Bradley Rowntree, from Barnard Castle, is holding the event on Friday, August 8, and will feature professional golfers from the region including John Harrison and Kenneth Ferrie.

He said: “I am a professional golfer playing out of Richmond Golf Club and I wanted to run a charity event for something close to my heart.

“My brother Adam is autistic and the charity does great things for those with the condition such as help with speech and takes them on activity trips.

“The event will also include a two-course meal and award presentation for winners and a charity auction with some great prizes donated from the golfing world.”

Paul McCairns, corporate fundraiser for North East Autism Society, said: “Events like this are absolutely crucial for us and enable us to help support families living with autism across the region.

"Autism affects everyone differently, we provide personalised services to meet the needs of the families and individuals who access our services.

"The charity has centres in Sunderland and Durham, we provide a range of services including care, education, short breaks, and training for people with autism."

The charity will be at the event with information about autism.

Entry per team is £225, based on one professional player and three amateurs, and includes the dinner and auction with prizes from Ernie Els and Gary Player.

There will also be prizes for nearest the pin and longest drive.

Mr Rowntree said: “There are also opportunities for local businesses to support us by sponsoring a hole, from as little as £50."
