A MAN has died after being hit by a van as he walked along a lane late at night.

The accident happened last night (Thursday, July 24) at about 11.30pm on the B6313 at Bluehouse Bank, between Pelton Fell and Grange Villa, near Chester-le-Street, County Durham.

The victim, a local man in his mid-40s, was heading towards Grange Villa and was struck by a Ford Transit Tipper travelling in the same direction.

He suffered a fatal head injury and was confirmed dead at the scene.

The van driver, a local man in his mid-30s, was not injured.

Sergeant Lee Morris, of Durham Police’s road policing unit, said there was no footpath on the stretch of the road.

He added that it was believed that the victim, who was wearing dark clothing, was walking with his back to oncoming traffic.

Anyone who witnessed the accident , or saw the victim or the vehicle involved shortly before it happened, is asked to call the police non-emergency number 101.

Callers should ask for the road policing unit or the collision investigation department.
