STAFF at a Durham city centre pub rolled out the barrel in the name of charity.

Workers at The Library, formerly Varsity, in Saddler Street, did their bit for a national fund-raising drive launched by their company.

The Stonegate pub company has already its target of bringing in more than £100,000 for the children’s charity Variety.

Every pub in the chain is receiving a giant passport that is being taken around the country.

When it arrived at The Library the staff decided to take it to their sister venue, The Slug and Lettuce, in the city’s Walkergate complex, by donning fancy dress and rolling a beer barrel through the streets of the city.

The Library team first rolled the barrel up to Durham Cathedral, where photographs were taken, and then back down Saddler Street, through Market Place to Claypath and Walkergate.

The pub’s party planner Rosie Holness said they raised £350 and the local branch of Barclays Bank would match that, making a total of £700.

She added: “The company has also made an ale that is on sale in all of our bars, which when bought a donation goes to Variety. We have a song available on ITunes too, so a lot of effort has been made to make cash for this very worthy cause.”
