BRITISH Transport Police (BTP) officers have released CCTV images after a bike was stolen from cycle racks outside Darlington railway station.

Officers are hoping the man pictured will be able to assist them with their investigation, and are appealing for help identifying him.

PC Tony McGhin said: “At 8.15am on Thursday, July 3, a 44-year-old man from Darlington locked his mountain bike in the racks and went off to work.

"When he returned that evening, the bike and lock were gone.”

Officers have viewed footage from a number of CCTV cameras at the station, which has led to the release of a series of images.

PC McGhin added: “Reducing cycle crime is a major priority for BTP and I am working hard to catch the person responsible for this theft.

"If you recognise the man pictured, or have any other information which might help, please get in touch.”

This investigation is part of Operation Wiggins, a national effort by BTP to tackle the theft of bicycles from railway stations.

PC McGhin added: “There are steps cyclists can take to reduce the risk of becoming the victim of theft, including bike frame marking and using a high-quality lock.”

Anyone with information is asked to call BTP on 0800-405-040, or text 61016, quoting reference PSUB/B3.

Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers, on 0800-555-111.
