POLICE have named the climber killed when he fell from cliffs near Runswick Bay in North Yorkshire on Friday.

Malcolm Hall, also known as Mac, aged 51, was from Skelton near Saltburn. It is believed he may have been collecting Whitby Jet - something he was fond of doing.

A statement from his family read: "On Friday 18 July our family was devastated by the sudden and tragic death of Mac. Not only have we lost a son, brother, dad, granddad and uncle, we have also lost a friend who loved his family dearly and was always there for us whenever we needed him, no matter what.

"It is a small comfort to us knowing that Mac died doing something that he loved.

"He will be terribly missed by us and his wide circle of friends who we would like to thank for their kind words of comfort, love and support.

"Mac's sudden death has saddened our family and we would like to left in peace so that we can grieve in private and come to terms with this painful loss."

A fellow climber, from Whitby, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and has been released on police bail.
