TWO leisure centres have been commended by the NHS for their support for breastfeeding mothers.
Freeman’s Quay Leisure Centre, in Durham City, and Spennymoor Leisure Centre, both run by Durham County Council, were praised for offering baby cafes, classes and information sessions.
At the cafes, which were presented with certificates by the NHS, breastfeeding mothers can chat to others about their experiences and get advice and guidance from health professionals.
Kay Smith, centre manager at Freeman’s Quay, said: “Working closely with the NHS we developed a new baby cafe at Freeman’s Quay which opened in March this year.
"It is very popular with local mums and we are delighted to have received this award so soon after the cafe’s launch.”
Mark Lee, centre manager at Spennymoor, added: “Our baby cafe has been running since March and mums and their partners really enjoy coming to the centre, meeting other parents and finding support. To be recognised in this way is very rewarding for everyone at the centre.”
