AN author will discuss his book on the 1980s Miners’ Strike in an event commemorating the dispute’s 30th anniversary.

Journalist Seamus Milne’s book, The Enemy Within: Thatcher’s Secret War Against the Miners, is regarded as the seminal work on the strike.

He has updated the book and will talk about it on the eve of Durham Miners’ Gala, on Friday (July 11) between 5.30pm and 7 pm, in the main hall at Redhills, Durham City - headquarters of the Durham Miners Association.

The event has been organised by the Durham-based People’s Bookshop.

The People’s Bookshop owner, Ben Sellers, said: "When I opened this bookshop back in 2011, I wanted it to be a magnet for local and alternative viewpoints and a hub of activism as well as being a great little bookshop.

“Seumas Milne's talk ticks all of those boxes because we're still living with the effects of the Miners' Strike, both within the labour movement and in local communities throughout County Durham.

“One thing that really marks out the history of County Durham is struggle and solidarity, in whatever walk of life. That is why the strike hit such a chord in this part of the world."
