AN investigation is underway after a Metro worker died following a fall from a ladder while carrying out maintenance work on the line.

The incident happened at Nexus Rail’s headquarters on Christon Road, in Gosforth, Newcastle at 2pm on Sunday.

Paramedics called and treated the man but could not save him.

Part of the tracks were closed and trains were stopped as emergency services dealt with the incident.

Raymond Johnstone, director of rail and infrastructure for Nexus, said: “A member of our staff has tragically been killed while doing maintenance work on Metro.

“The thoughts and condolences of everyone at Nexus is with our colleague’s family.

“We are co-operating fully with investigations by the police and Office of Rail Regulation.”

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “At 2pm on Sunday, July 6, police received a report that a man had fallen from a ladder and sustained injuries at Nexus Rail headquarters in Christon Road, Gosforth.

“Police, fire and paramedics attended and the man was treated by ambulance staff but has died as a result of his injuries.

“Due to the incident occurring close to Metro tracks then trains in the area have been stopped to allow for emergency services to respond.

“There may be some delays to services between Regent Centre and Gosforth - check with Nexus for more information. Enquiries are ongoing into the man’s death and the Office of Rail Regulation has been informed.”
