THE POLICE watchdog says it is satisfied Northumbria Police can investigate the death of a man whose body was found at the foot of cliffs after earlier being arrested.
Karl David Carson was found dead at the bottom of cliffs at about 1am on Sunday (July 6) at Marsden Grotto, a beauty spot near South Shields.
Mr Carson, of nearby Boldon Colliery, had been arrested after a fight in a car park following an engagement party at the Marsden Grotto pub.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) was called in because of the circumstances.
However, this afternoon, Northumbria Police said: "We can confirm that the IPCC have decided that this will remain with Northumbria Police to carry out as a local investigation.
"Officers are continuing to provide support to the family of Mr Carson at this difficult time.
"Enquiries are continuing into this matter and we have no further information to release at this time."
Northumbria Police say that Mr Carson managed to get out of the police car as officers went to arrest a second man.
The father-of-two played football for Wearside League club Boldon CA.
