College staff ready for retirement

FOUR members of staff at a college in Darlington are retiring next week, on the last day of term.

Senior science technician Rowland Burdon is retiring after 37 years and is currently the longest serving member of staff at Queen Elizabeth (QE) Sixth Form College.

Bill Stuart leaves after 26 years of teaching history at the college.

During his time at QE, Mr Stuart has enjoyed many roles including that of head of history and higher education co-ordinator.

Also retiring are John Thorley and Jan Jack.

Over the last 39 years, Mr Thorley has had various roles in education, the last seven of which have been at QE as head of physics.

Mrs Jack is retiring as a learning support assistant after four years service,

Like Mr Thorley, she has been in education for a good number of years.

Before coming to QE, Mrs Jack was the special educational needs co-ordinator,) at Risedale School, in Catterick Garrison.

QE principal Tim Fisher said: ‘Rowland, Bill, John and Jan have been tremendous colleagues.

"They have all done a great deal in various ways to support students and other members of staff.

"I hope they have long and happy retirements and thank them for their contribution to the ongoing success of QE and our students."

Mr Burdon said: "I have had a wonderful time at QE and can’t believe it’s 37 years since I first started.

"The college is a great place to work and there’s a tremendous mix of people, both students and staff.

"I’ll miss work, but it’s the right time for me to move on.

"I am looking forward to having more time to spend with my family and playing the piano."
