CHILDREN at a Weardale nursery are growing their own fruit and vegetables on part of their new playground.

The garden at Wolsingham Primary School’s nursery has undergone a major refurbishment thanks to staff and parents volunteering their time and effort.

They have created a new sand pit, grass area and greenhouse made from recycled plastic bottles.

And one of the key improvements has been the installation of new raised beds and a herb garden.

Nursery teacher Kim Robson said: “The children are showing themselves to be keen gardeners growing their own fruit and vegetables from seed in the greenhouse and raised beds.

“The plan is they will get to eat what they grow.

“They are also really enjoying their new sand pit which is designed to inspire the children’s creativity and imagination.

“All this has come about thanks to the hard work and determination of staff, parents and the children themselves.”

The children are currently growing a crop of strawberries, radishes, carrots, lettuce and pumpkins as well as tomatoes in their greenhouse.

The new play area is also home to a large wooden fort which replaced their previous castle after it was destroyed by arsonists last year.
