THERE was a chill in the air during a cold-themed science workshop for pupils from five primary schools.

Children from Leyburn, Kirby Stephen, Bowes Hutchinson and Green Lane in Barnard Castle-based Green Lane and Montalbo Primary Schools learned about what happens when things cool down during a ‘cool physics’ session at Barnard Castle School.

Dr Steve Wrathmall, from the school, led the workshop, using liquid nitrogen to produce fountains, frozen fruit and ice cream, to demonstrate the effects of the liquid.

Pupils were also entertained by experiments with levitating magnets.

Mr Wrathmall said: “I also introduced them to the coldest possible temperature you can ever reach and they each got a goody bag containing some stuff to do experiments with.”
