TEESSIDE-born football pundit and former soccer star Chris Kamara showed he was still fleet of foot when he nabbed a suspected thief at the World Cup.

Kamara, on duty with Sky Sports, was himself questioned by police following the incident in Rio in which jewellery was apparently taken from another man.

The 56-year-old from Middlesbrough tweeted: "Not lost me pace!!! I just caught this street robber. Done in now though."

However, Kamara ended up being detained himself by officers who wanted to find out what had gone on.

"My good deed has backfired I have to go to the police station now to make a statement," he tweeted.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "We are aware of the incident and we are providing consular assistance to Mr Kamara.

"In terms of his actions in chasing the assailant, that goes against our recommended advice."

Admonished for his bravery, Kamara added: "Police & British Consulate in Brazil have politely told me off, a lot of these guys are armed!"
