POLICE are investigating an incident during which a noxious substance was poured on a tent and then set alight.

Officers were called to Lindisfarne Close, in East Denton, Newcastle, in the early hours of yesterday (Saturday) morning, where three young men, aged 14 to 18, were camping overnight in a front garden. At 1am, they became aware that a noxious substance had been poured on the tent after noticing a stain on the fabric.

The trio checked outside the tent, then went back inside, and a short time later the tent was set on fire.

They all escaped uninjured, but the tent was damaged.

Northumbria Police is investigating the incident and appealed to witnesses, or anyone with any information about those responsible, to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Don Gibson, from the force's Major Crime unit, said: "This is a serious incident which all too easily could have had tragic consequences.

"Fortunately no-one was hurt.

"We are appealing for witnesses, anyone who was in the area and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, to contact police.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who may have any information about this incident.

"There are additional uniformed officers on patrol in the area to reassure the community.

"Please speak to an officer if you have any concerns about this matter."

House-to-house enquiries are also being carried out in the area.
