PEOPLE were invited to take a step back in time yesterday (Saturday, June 14) and enjoy a vintage garden party marking the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

The event at Finchale Training College near Brasside, Durham City, helped raise funds to enable the college to provide vocational training for adults from military and civilian communities.

With its roots as a rehabilitation centre for injured service personal, beginning in 1943, Finchale Training College has provided support and training services for veterans in need over 70 years.

Yesterday’s (June 14) event featured an assortment of stalls selling everything from vintage clothes and hats to home grown’ bedding plans and hanging baskets.

There was also a bouncy castle, games and music, as well as afternoon teas .

Earlier this month the college was awarded almost £325,000 to help veterans return to civilian life. The grant was made by the Forces in Mind Trust.

It will fund the Joint Transition Support Service, aimed at wounded, sick or injured veterans experiencing mental health and well-being issues.

Leaders hope to support 150 veterans and their families over the next two years, all of whom will be referred to Finchale by the Personnel Recovery Unit and Phoenix House Personnel Recovery Centre at Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire.
