A TEENAGER has been presented with an award for exceptional bravery after caring for her mother who was seriously injured in a road accident.

Amy Hall, 13, of Ferryhill, was suddenly thrust into the role of carer when her mother, Paula, was hit by a van in May 2013.

She suffered broken ribs, a collapsed lung and other severe injuries which meant she was unable to work for six months.

Despite her young age, Amy helped her mother every day, giving her medication and ensuring she was comfortable at home.

The Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College student’s efforts led to her winning a Youth in the Community Award as part of Ferryhill Civic Awards 2014.

She said: “When my mum had her accident, all of our lives were turned upside down, it was such an awful time for all of the family.

“Helping my mum didn’t seem like being brave, I wanted to help her to get better and that’s what I did.

“When my dad was at work in the mornings, I would help her out of bed and make her breakfast.

“When I was at school, I would always make sure that I called her during break to make sure that she was ok.

“I am so happy that she is better now and back to her old self. Winning the award meant so much to me and my family, I was really surprised that I had even been nominated.”

Mrs Hall said: “We couldn’t be any prouder of Amy.

“She helped me so much and for such a young person, she demonstrated such bravery during what really was an awful time for everyone.

“It has been lovely to see Amy being recognised for supporting her family, we are all so happy for her.”

The Ferryhill Civic Awards recognise the unsung heroes of the town who have made a contribution to the community.

In addition to her award Amy also won a £25 gift voucher.

Laura Langdale, of the E-Cafe, in Ferryhill, who nominated her, said: “When I heard about her bravery and everything she was going through, I was so impressed and thought that she would be a worthy winner of this award.”

Kevin Brennan, of Ferryhill college, said: “We’re all really proud of Amy and the outstanding bravery she demonstrated throughout a time that was clearly hard for all of her family.”
