A section of Newcastle University has again been sealed off this morning following reports of another suspicious substance being uncovered.

It follows the arrest of two 18-year-old male Russian students following a "report of concern" from the university at around 10am on Tuesday. Both are Newcastle University students.

It is understood that, as part of their follow-up work, police found a further "suspicious substance" and the cordon was imposed at about 4.30am this morning.

Two university buildings - The King's Gate administration building and the INTO accommodation block, which are next to each other - were both evacuated.

The admin building has now re-opened and staff have return. The accommodation block remains closed to students to allow further investigations.

"All students have been relocated to alternative accommodation on the university campus and we continue to work closely with Newcastle University to minimise disruption and return students to their accommodation at the earliest opportunist," said a university spokesman

A spokesman for Northumbria Police added: "This is in connection with the original investigation at Newcastle University."

The city centre INTO building was evacuated on Tuesday morning and a controlled explosion was carried out on Newcastle Town Moor after police found "potentially suspicious items" in the building.
