A MAN suffered injuries to his neck after being assaulted in Newcastle city centre tonight (Tuesday).

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "Police were called to Grainger Street in Newcastle city centre at 5.09pm following reports of an assault.

"Officers have attended the scene and an investigation is underway. A man has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment to a neck injury."

A 44-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently helping police with their enquiries.
