A MAN has appeared in court charged with murder.

Gary Thomas Mawson appeared at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court today (June 10) charged with the murder of Bryan Jeffrey Knox in Washington, Wearside, on Sunday morning.

Mr Mawson, 36, of Washington, was remanded in custody and the case was adjourned to Newcastle Crown Court on Wednesday.

Mr Knox, 32, of Barmston, Washington, died following an incident at Usworth Hall, on Stephenson Industrial Estate, between 10.30am and 10.50am on Sunday.

A post-mortem examination found he died of pressure injuries to his neck.

Tributes have been left at the scene.

One said: “My precious son Bryan. A mother should never have to say goodbye to her son. Broken hearts all round xxx.

“You’re in my heart forever, all our love, Mam and Dave xxx.”

Police have renewed their appeal for witnesses to come forward.

Detective Inspector Andy Fairlamb of Northumbria Police said: “While we’ve spoken to a number of people about what happened we know the area is popular with people walking their dogs or passing through on foot and I’d continue to encourage witnesses to come forward.

“Anyone who was in the area from around 10am onwards who has any information is asked to contact us as soon as possible.

“No matter how insignificant you feel it is, it could be vital for the investigation.”
