A SUMMIT aimed at stopping vital natural resources being lost into rivers and streams will be held next week (Wednesday, June 18).

The Environment Agency and the Wear Rivers Trust are worried soil, water and nutrients are being lost into watercourses around the Durham area.

They have drawn up a list of priority areas for action, around Pittington Beck, Old Durham Beck, Croxdale Beck, Lower River Browney and Brancepeth Beck.

Farmers and landowners in these areas will be able to bid for cash to help them retain the resources in the ground.

The Trust is staging a seminar and farm tour, the first of its kind in the area, to explain the details.

This will be held at Brancepeth Golf Club, Brancepeth, near Durham, on the morning of Wednesday, June 18, and will include a tour of nearby Little White Farm, where farmer David Jackson has taken action to retain soil and nutrients following flash flooding in 2012.
