A WOMAN was airlifted to hospital after she thrown from her horse and then trampled on by the animal.

The incident happened at an equestrian event near Tow Law, County Durham, at about 4.30pm on Sunday, June 8.

The 26-year-old was airlifted to Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary with serious injuries.

Her condition on arrival was described as stable.

A spokesman for the Great North Air Ambulance said: "We were called to an equestrian event at the request of road paramedics after a female rider was thrown and then trampled by a horse.

"Road paramedics had begun treatment on scene and the patient was then flown to the RVI in Newcastle with multiple injuries."
