A VOLUNTEER driver who has helped residents reach hospital appointments since 1994 is to help a charity mark its 20th anniversary.

Mike Pennack, of Newton Aycliffe, has helped out at the Social Resource Centre, in Ferryhill, since it was set up.

He has taken children and adults with mobility or mental health issues to their appointments.

Youngsters with care needs have also been transported to school by the service.

The charity has provided high-quality social care services across County Durham from its base on the Dean and Chapter Industrial Estate.

Amongst its other services is personal support for people such as preparing meals, getting out of bed and cleaning.

When the charity began it had three staff members crammed into a tiny office now it provides help and support to more than 300 users.

To mark the 20th anniversary staff at the resource centre will hold a strawberry tea afternoon.

It will take place at the Dean Bank Institute, on St Cuthbert’s Terrace, in Ferryhill, between 1pm and 3pm.
