A ROCK concert held in tribute to a Ferryhill man who died of cancer has raised £5,000 to boost the work of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

The nine-hour long Ronnington charity concert at Shildon Civic Hall was organised by musician Russ Tippins in memory of his friend Ronnie Patchett, of Ferryhill.

Mr Patchett, 54, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2009. He took part in trials for a new drug at the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre, in Newcastle.

This was the third Ronnington festival and ten local bands took part to raise £5,000 for the charity.

Mr Tippins said: “We’re thrilled by how popular the event is.

“It’s for Ronnie, who was such a fan of live music, and for all the people experiencing the pain of cancer.

“It’s a wonderful way to continue to remember Ronnie, enjoy great music and help other people too.”

The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation was set up in 2008 to find ways to beat cancer. The Ronnington festival has raised £13,000 overall for the charity.

Lady Elsie Robson said: “Their support for the foundation is wonderful and they’re doing Ronnie’s memory proud.

“Thank you to everyone who helped to make the event such a success.”
