THREE people escaped a major traffic accident with just minor injuries following a collision between their car and a large goods vehicle on the A1 on Saturday (May 31).

Fire crews from Bedale, Northallerton, Richmond and Ripon were called to the accident, which happened just before midday.

Firefighters had received reports of people trapped in the car. When they arrived they found the two adult women and a young man were not trapped, but required first aid. They administered medical assistance to the car’s three occupants until paramedics arrived and made the car safe.

The three were then assisted from the car and transported to hospital by ambulance with minor injuries.

The northbound carriageway was closed between the Catterick junctions at about midday on Saturday (May 31).

The closure resulted in large tailbacks on the A1 and A1M motorway.
