PUPILS at a Darlington primary school showed off their creative talents during their recent art week.

All year groups at Skerne Park Academy were involved in the project, which was organised by Year 3 teacher and art co-ordinator Beth Steel.

Artist Yvonne Preston, of Darlington-based Scrap Studioarts, worked with youngsters to create a range of exhibits with a recycling theme.

They included sphere-shaped sculptures made from sticks and artworks fashioned from plastic bottle tops.

Miss Steel said: "Art week involved the whole school and was a big success.

"The children loved working with Yvonne, they enjoyed being creative and working in teams."

The school borrowed four pieces of artwork from the art lending library, based at Crown Street Library.

Children spent time studying the pieces, which included a small section of a sculpture called Waste Scape.

Other items borrowed from the lending library included a fizzy drink can which started dancing when activated by a mobile phone and a blank piece of lined paper.

A ranger from South Park, near the school, was invited to talk to children as part of art week.

He spoke about recycling, as well as spreading the anti-litter message.

Miss Steel added: "Art week was a chance for the children to celebrate the art works they have created."
