WANNABE brainiacs gathered to pit their wits against each other at a charity quiz.

Teams from across Darlington and beyond vied for first place in the Darlington and District Samaritans’ annual quiz.

The Big Fat Lots of Fun Quiz was held in a bid to raise valuable funds for the charity, which plays a vital role in supporting some of the community’s most vulnerable people.

Acting as quizmaster for the evening, The Northern Echo’s editor, Peter Barron, showed no favouritism to a team made up of hacks from the paper as he tested the crowd with headline challenges.

Servings of specially prepared tapas helped to boost brain power as the teams went head to head at Darlington College.

All proceeds from the quiz will go towards the Darlington and District Samaritans and used to directly support their work in the town.

The charity works tirelessly in the community to help people in need of support, advice or a listening ear.

Last year, Darlington Samaritans responded to almost 25,000 phone calls, more than 3,000 emails and more than 3,000 text messages.

The charity’s work largely depends on a devoted team of volunteers who work in a variety of roles, from fundraising to listening to callers.
