A NEW mayor says he is thrilled to take on the historic role.
Councillor John Robinson was today (Wednesday, May 28) elected the 412th Mayor of Durham in a mayor-making ceremony at Durham Town Hall.
Speaking afterwards, the 56-year-old grandfather said: “I just can’t believe it. I’m flying. I’m thrilled.
“As my grandchildren said: ‘It’s awesome’.”
The Labour councillor for Sedgefield has been a member of Durham County Council since 2005, was a member of Sedgefield Borough Council from 1995 onwards and has been a town or parish councillor for 36 years.
His consort is his wife, Maxine, and his chosen charity is Finchale Training College, Brasside.
Coun Patrick Conway was elected Deputy Mayor.
Coun Robinson is also the new chairman of Durham County Council.
Coun Pauline Charlton, the outgoing mayor, was unable to attend today’s ceremony due to illness.
