AN outgoing town mayor has thanked his supporters as he handed over the mayoral chains.

Councillor Frank Harrison was the mayor of Barnard Castle for two years before being replaced by Councillor John Blissett earlier this month.

During his second year in office, Coun Harrison raised more than £930 for the Teesdale YMCA.

Several young people who are involved with the initiative helped Cllr Sandra Moorhouse with the catering for a ‘posh pie and pea’ supper – Cllr Harrison’s final mayoral fundraising event - which raised £621.

He thanked all the local businesses that supported the event with sponsorship and donations of prizes.

He said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has welcomed and encouraged me in the role of town mayor over the last two years.

“It has been my honour and pleasure to represent Barnard Castle at events in the town and within other communities.

“Throughout my time as mayor I have been ably supported by my wife, Pauline, who has been a magnificent mayoress at my side.

“Cllr John Blissett has been a splendid deputy over the last two years and I congratulate him on his election as town mayor and I wish him every success.

“He will be well supported, as I have been, by his fellow councillors and by council staff.”
