RESIDENTS are being given the chance to learn about beekeeping at a new community apiary in Darlington.

The Darlington Beekeepers Association is holding a free training day at the apiary on the former bowling green at the Bowling Dene park off Widdowfield Street on Saturday.

The association is keen to get the community involved in looking after the hives after the council granted permission for their placement on the disused green.

Around eight hives currently occupy the site and the training day will give people the chance to learn more about the resident bees and the basics of beekeeping.

Suits will also be provided for people to get closer to the hives.

The event runs from 11am to 5pm and the following Saturday, June 6, will see the community apiary officially opened by Darlington MP Jenny Chapman.

Future plans for the apiary include creating a wildflower meadow on the green with help from the Darlington branch of the Friends of the Earth.
