A GOLF club that was put up for sale after financial problems forced it to close is now under offer.

Woodham Golf and Country Club, near Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, went into administration last June, dashing its owner’s dreams of creating a £32m housing and leisure development on the site.

In February, the golf club was put up for sale and on Friday (May 23) Savills Estate Agents confirmed they were close to exchanging contracts with a prospective buyer.

The identity of the buyer and the amount offered has not been confirmed.

As well as the 18-hole golf course, which closed in November, the site also comes with planning permission for 50 executive homes, a new golf clubhouse and a 75-bedroom hotel with conference and spa facilities.

The club’s Irish owner, Washington Developments, spent five years securing planning permission but was unable to raise the cash needed for the project.
