THE introduction of a controversial new parking regime has been delayed for a week to allow extra time for the delivery and installation of parking meters.
Parking charges in Northallerton’s High Street will now begin on June 9 instead of June 2 as originally planned.
There will be 19 meters in total along the length of the High Street, between Quaker Lane and South Parade.
The county council claims the new parking regime will ease congestion and boost the town’s economy by making short-stay parking easier in the High Street.
And despite the opposition of local traders it claims local businesses will benefit by motorists being encouraged to use off-street car parks for longer stays.
Parking in the High Street will be free for the first 30 minutes. Those who choose to leave their vehicles parked in the High Street will be able to do so for a maximum period of two hours, at the rate of 80p for one hour or £1.60 for two hours.
Residents with permits for parking near their homes on the High Street will not be affected.
