A DARLINGTON hair salon has raised hundreds of pounds for the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).

Head 2 Toe, in Nightingale Avenue, has held fundraising activities for the past month, including a coffee morning, raffle and a sponsored head shave that brought the total to more than £800.

Janet Thorp, from Harrowgate Hill, was the brave customer that got her locks chopped.

The 76-year-old, who has ten grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, said: “I just feel honoured that I’ve been able to help the charity.

“If I won the lottery, I’d give them all my money. I think it’s an incredible service. I can’t describe how I feel in my heart. It is a great pleasure to be a supporter.”

Salon owner Sharon Williams added: “Our customers have been really supportive and Janet extremely brave.

“She was emotional after she’d got the chop and we are all very proud.

“Personally, I’ve supported the air ambulance for many years and have played its weekly lottery.

“I’m pleased I have now been able to continue my support of its life-saving work through my business, because you never know when you might need their help.”

Mrs Williams and Mrs Thorp presented the funds to Janet Hume, of GNAAS, at the salon recently this month.

GNAAS operates three air ambulances that cover the North-East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria and relies on the generosity of the public to raise the £4m needed to run the service every year.
