A UNIVERSITY lecture is set to delve into the biggest and bloodiest battle between the English and the Scottish.

Historian John Sadler will give a blow-by-blow account of the Battle of Flodden which reached its 500th anniversary last September.

The dubbed Britain’s ‘forgotten’ battle took place during the reign of Henry VIII while he was fighting in France. James IV was honour bound to aid the French so crossed the River Tweed into Northumberland and declared war.

It is estimated 15,000 died in the space of two and a half hours including James IV who fell and was hacked to death, a huge blow to Scotland losing their king and military prowess.

The lectures will begin at 2:30pm at Sunderland University’s St Peter’s Campus on Wednesday, May 21, but visitors are advised to arrive by 2pm for parking and registration.
