STUDENTS enjoyed a musical journey through time as they sang the hits of the 1980s as part of their studies.

The sixth form music pupils at the King James I Academy, Bishop Auckland, took to the stage recently in front of fellow pupils and teachers.

Hits by artists such as Madonna, Chaka Khan, Fleetwood Mac and Cyndi Lauper amongst others were performed.

The concert at the academy, on South Church Road, was organised to form part of the students’ Btec course work.

Elliot Smith, director of learning for music at the academy, said: “It takes a great deal of courage to stand up on stage and perform in front of so many people.

“For a number of our students this was the first time that they had experienced performing to a large audience.

“However, they coped extremely well and they all overcame their initial nerves to put on a great show and we are extremely proud of their achievement.

“The students were enthused by the many compliments received from the audience after the show and we are already investigating musical themes for the next show.”
