DETECTIVES investigating the death of hit-and-run victim Danny Wake have issued a new appeal for witnesses, six months on from the tragedy.

The three-year-old, from Darlington, was knocked over and killed on November 4 as he walked home from the town centre with his mother and younger brother.

He had been into town to pick up an Argos catalogue so he could choose his Christmas presents.

His mother, Kayren Winter, told The Northern Echo today (May 9) that she did not want interest in the case to fade away and urged anyone who knows the identity of the driver involved to come forward.

She said: “His inquest is in June and then that will be it. I want something to happen or someone to come forward.”

Despite extensive and repeated appeals by both police and Danny's friends and family, the driver responsible for the youngster's death has so far not been traced.

Durham Police said that since the incident more than 300 homes have been visited and a number of potential witnesses interviewed.

Hundreds of hours of CCTV footage have also been examined and more than 300 calls have been made to police following media appeals.

Detective Superintendent Kevin Weir, who is leading the investigation, said: "Six months on from the tragic death of Danny I would like to appeal to the driver of the vehicle that hit Danny to come forward.

“Over the past six months my investigation team have pursued a number of lines of enquiry and as we continue with this investigation we remain keen to hear from anyone with information which may help us find out what happened to Danny."

A reward of £3,000 was also offered by Crimestoppers for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the driver the hit and killed Danny.

Danny was struck by a vehicle near the junction of Falmer Road and Neasham Road, in Darlington, at about 10.35am on November 4.

He was wearing a bright green coat and his mother was pushing a pushchair when the collision happened.

Anyone with any information can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.
