A DAY of events to celebrate church music will be held later this month (Saturday, May 17).
The Great North Organ Day will be held across Newcastle’s two cathedrals, the Catholic St Mary’s and the Anglican St Nicholas’, plus St John the Baptist Church, Grainger Street, on Saturday, May 17.
Among the many events planned, James Lancelot, the Durham Cathedral organist, will give a talk on his work, at St Nicholas’ Cathedral at 10.20am.
Organist Gordon Stewart, best known from BBC’s Songs of Praise, will give a recital at St Mary’s Cathedral at 1.10pm.
Organiser Michael Grave said: “This event will help those who have been appointed an organ scholar or those churches who possibly only have a pianist who does not play the organ but with knowledge and up-skilling could move in that direction and act as an organist or deputy.”
