FLYTIPPERS dumping rubbish along a County Durham lane are being targeted by councils determined to prosecute offenders.

Land along Brusselton Lane is being used as a regular dumping ground for fridge freezers, mattresses and bags of rubbish.

The road stretches between Brusselton, near Bishop Auckland, and Bolam, near Darlington.

Durham County Council and Darlington Borough Council staff are patrolling the area in a bid to catch those responsible.

Councillor Trish Pemberton, who sits on both the county and Shildon town councils, said: “It’s getting worse.

“Some of the mattresses have rats’ nests in and fridge freezers have been dumped.

“We’re asking people to take it to the tip or to arrange for the council to collect it.”

Between January and May this year two incidents of flytipping were reported to the county council.

Darlington Borough Council received five reports of flytipping in the area over the last six months which led to three prosecutions.

A borough council spokesman said: ““We’re aware of the problem and we’ve conducted several investigations.

“We take all reports of fly tipping seriously and are keen to prosecute.”

Ian Hoult, neighbourhood protection manager at the county council, said: “We’re aware of incidents of flytipping in the area.

“We investigate all incidents, looking for evidence of those responsible so we can take appropriate action.”

You know them nice helpful chaps who will come to your house and take away all your rubbish for less than you'd pay for a skip.

Look no further.

@darloboss They don't charge at local tips here unless you're a business. I've never paid a penny to get rid of TV's, household waste, old electrical goods, bags of green waste, black sacks of rubbish etc. On the other hand if you call them out to have the rubbish collected, then fair doos the council charge you a small fee. But AFAIK there aren't any limits on that; so you could get rid of your sofa, fridge, and a few other bulky bits in one go, and get better value. I wouldn't expect them to come to my house to take my rubbish on demand without something to at least cover the cost of them coming out in a van especially for me.

That's County Durham anyway; not sure if Darlo charge at their tips.

@reasonedview Er, are you blind, it says three above. "Darlington Borough Council received five reports of flytipping in the area over the last six months which led to three prosecutions."

We all know who the fly tippers are, we also know how spineless the darlo police are in dealing with those who we know are fly tipping - I won't say who they are as the spineless echo will remove the comment - rhymes with lipsy or hippos

60% success rate of prosecution, and that ignores the likelyhood of multiple incidents by the same person.
That is a very high rate of prosecution, good going DBC, keep up the good work.

a friend of mine recently accidently dropped a fag dump in durham and before she could bend down and pick it up was hit by some jobsworth with a fine. with Appleby coming soon I wonder if the brave jobsworth will be fining any of that community who leave litter, waste and excrement everywhere.
We all know the answer to that one . Same as our spineless police afraid of them.

You say the fag butt was dropped accidentally? I doubt that very much - your friend was just caught red handed littering and got the fine he/she deserved. End of story. If anything we need far heavier and far more fines for littering. Tell your friend to take more care with their rubbish next time they're out and about - there is absolutely no excuse for it.
