SHOPPERS will be treated to three themed market days as part of a national celebration of the vibrant tradition.

The Love Your Local Market campaign will see Durham Market Place come alive for three weekends in May, hosting new stalls from various businesses.

The first is a Youth Market, to be held on Sunday, May 11, when more than 20 young entrepreneurs will showcase their business ideas and sell their products.

On Sunday May 18, about 30 businesses will be bringing their trade to Durham for the first time.

Finally, a Vintage and Nostalgia Market will be held over the Bank Holiday weekend, May 25-26, as part of Durham’s Nostalgia weekend.

Stalls will share the Market Place with World War II living history re-enactors, military vehicles and period entertainment.

Colin Wilkes, managing director of Durham Markets, said: “The enthusiasm for these markets proves that markets are alive and well in the UK.

“Additionally, Durham Market Place has a unique atmosphere and reputation, so it’s hardly surprising that we have traders from across the North East and beyond keen to take their first ever stall here.”

Each market will be open between 11am and 4pm.
