MORE than 2,000 customers were left without electricity due to a fault in overhead cables in Sunderland.

Wearsiders in the Millfield area of the city, as well as students and staff at the Sunderland University City Campus buildings, lost power, phone lines and internet connection for about two and a half hours earlier today (Friday, April 25).

Northern Power is still trying to identify the origin of the fault.

A spokesperson for the company said: “We would like to apologies to our customers for any inconvenience caused by the disruption.

“We used our sub stations in the area, which gives temporary electricity to homes, to make sure that people did not stay without electricity for too long and to ensure our teams had enough to fix the issue.”

A spokesperson for the university said: “The University’s City Campus experienced a power outage as a result of a substation failure off site. This not only affected the University, it also affected areas of the wider city.

“Power and telephone lines were quickly restored to all buildings and IT services returned by 4.30pm.”
