THREE cyclists have pedalled between the football grounds of Aberdeen and Sunderland in memory of a cancer victim.

Keith Purser, Steve Reynolds and Jim Duncan covered the 364 miles between Pittodrie and the Stadium of Light in four days, reaching Sunderland today (Thursday, April 24).

They are raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care in memory of Mr Purser’s cousin Joe Simpson, of Bishop Auckland, who died of cancer last May, aged 58.

Mr Simpson had been watching Sunderland AFC since 1966 and was a season ticket holder for many years.

He and Mr Purser, an Aberdeen fan, would occasionally visit each other’s home grounds to take in a game.

Mr Purser, a 55-year-old retired police officer, said he did almost no cycling but the ride had gone well, with no injuries.
