A CATHEDRAL steward has created a set of glass bowls to support its £10m fundraising campaign.

David Mekins made the bowls by hand using Float glass in the garage of his Sedgefield home and they will be sold in aid of Durham Cathedral's Open Treasure appeal.

The bowls show St Cuthbert's pectoral cross and are on sale now in the cathedral shop.

Each one took Mr Mekins, a retired electrical engineer, more than 40 hours to make.

Mr Mekins said: "The St Cuthbert's Cross glass bowls reflect my love for Durham Cathedral and my passion for glass-making, which has become a professional hobby in recent years.

"I thoroughly enjoy my role as a volunteer cathedral steward and am delighted to be able to support Durham Cathedral and its Open Treasure appeal in this way."

The bowls are priced £29.95 each. The Open Treasure appeal will create a world class exhibition space and improve the cathedral's visitor experience.
