A CUP final winning goalkeeper who won accolades for his Wembley performance is seeking out old friends he fought alongside during the Second World War.

Jack Snowdon, 89, was judged by some as man-of-the-match for his display for Willington Football Club as a 26-year-old in the 1950 FA Amateur Cup Final.

The club, then in the Northern League, beat fellow North-East rivals Bishop Auckland 4-0 in front of 88,000 fans.

Injury later prevented him from playing for the England Amateur team and he has since been president and vice-chairman of the Willington club.

Mr Snowdon, of Willington, County Durham, served in the army for two and a half years after being conscripted in 1943 at the age of 18.

He underwent training at Preston, Lancashire, before joining the 704th Artisan Works Company of the Royal Engineers.

During spells in France, Belgium and Holland he was detailed to clear mines and build bridges.

After leaving the military he held several jobs including one as Wear Valley’s chief planning officer before retiring in 1980.

He said: “I want to find out if any of my friends from the Army are still alive as it would be nice to get in touch with them.

“I’m planning to approach The Royal British Legion to see if they can help me.”

Anyone who can help Mr Snowdon trace his ex-Army friends should contact him on 01388-746204.
