THE organiser of the Miss England competition compared a seaside resort’s beauty pageant to a Carry On film after a fracas broke out as the winner was revealed.

Angie Beasley, who has run beauty contests for 26 years, said she had never heard of violence at an event before last weekend’s Miss Scarborough contest.

North Yorkshire Police were called to the Flower of May holiday park, Lebberston, at the event’s climax at 11.45pm last Saturday (April 12), after up to ten supporters of one of the contestants punched, kicked and hit security staff with handbags.

The contestants and audience, which included young children, watched on as a melee ensued with a pensioner being knocked to the ground.

A section of the audience had earlier hissed, booed and chanted “fix” as contestants were eliminated and as student Jess Gale, 18, of Filey, North Yorkshire, collected the Miss Scarborough tiara, security staff moved to ask onlookers to show the contestants respect.

The event’s organiser Diane Yalezo said she would avoid staging the contest at bars in future and opt for a hotel serving cream teas to create a family atmosphere.

Ms Beasley added: “Emotions run high at these events, and you are bound to want your girl, but these people don't care what people think and it's a great shame that it was ruined by thugs.

“The whole thing sounded like 'Carry On Beauty Pageant' and I really hope it doesn't put Diane off, as she does a wonderful job.”

A police spokesman said no arrests were made.
