AN army of volunteer litter pickers is expected to descend on a Redcar as part of this year’s national Big Beach Clean Up.

The Marine Conservation Society event, which is being supported by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, takes place from 9.30am to 11.30am, on Friday, April 25.

Anyone who wants to take part should meet at the Majuba Road car park, at 9.15am, wearing sturdy footwear and dressed appropriately for the weather.

Christopher Massey, the council’s cabinet member for environment and rural affairs, said they were hoping this year’s clean up would be even more successful than the last.

Councillor Massey said: “Unfortunately litter and debris is an issue for beaches all over the UK, and the borough, so while the council does its best we’re always grateful for help.

“Last year we had more than 60 volunteers taking part and between them they picked up about four tonnes of litter, which is a fantastic effort.

“However, there are also a number of ‘friends of’ groups that work on environmental projects across the borough, throughout the year, so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved.”

The event is for people of all ages but anyone under 18 should be accompanied by an adult. Gloves and litter pickers will be provided. Big Beach Clean Up volunteers will receive a £5 Marks and Spencer voucher which is valid on a shop of £30 or more.
