A DURHAM man has completed the toughest footrace on earth.
Pete Nichols finished the Marathon de Sables, a 156-mile endurance challenge through the Sahara Desert, on Saturday (April 11).
After 44 hours and five minutes on the run over six days, he even mustered the energy to finish with a 200m sprint.
The former St Leonard’s Catholic School pupil, who now lives in Wigan, Lancashire, was placed 406th overall.
Runners must cope with heat of up to 50 degrees Celsius, carry everything needed to survive with them and cover distances of up to 81km per day.
